Common Uses and Characteristics of Ceramic PCB

Ceramic substrates refer to the special process boards where copper foil is directly connected to the surface (single or double-sided) of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) or aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramic substrates at high temperatures. The resulting ultra-thin composite substrate exhibits excellent electrical insulation, high thermal conductivity, outstanding solderability, and high adhesion strength. Similar to PCBs, it can corrode various patterns and has significant current-carrying capacity. Therefore, ceramic substrates have become the fundamental material for high-power power electronics circuit structures and connection technologies.

Characteristics:

  1. Strong mechanical stress, stable shape; high strength, high thermal conductivity, high insulation; strong adhesion, corrosion resistance.

  2. Excellent thermal cycling performance, 50,000 cycles, high reliability.

  3. Similar to printed circuit boards (or IMS substrates), it can corrode various structural patterns; pollution-free, environmentally friendly.

  4. Wide operating temperature range -55°C to 850°C; thermal expansion coefficient close to silicon, simplifying the production process of power modules.

Applications:

  1. High-power semiconductor modules; semiconductor coolers and electronic heaters; power control circuits and power hybrid circuits.

  2. Smart power components; high-frequency switch power supplies, solid-state relays.

  3. Automotive electronics, aerospace, and military electronic components.

  4. Solar panel components; special switches and receiving systems for telecommunications; industrial electronics such as lasers.

The advent of ceramic substrate products has ushered in the development of the heat dissipation application industry. Due to the excellent heat dissipation characteristics of ceramic substrates, they offer advantages such as high heat dissipation, low thermal resistance, long lifespan, and voltage resistance. With the improvement of production technology and equipment, product prices are rapidly rationalized, expanding the application areas in the LED industry, including indicator lights for household appliances, car lights, streetlights, and large outdoor billboards. The successful development of ceramic substrates will become a service for indoor and outdoor lighting products, making the future market for the LED industry even broader.
